SAN FRANCISCO Elizabeth “Betsy” England was appointed secretary of the State Bar’s Litigation Section Executive Committee. England, a partner at CARROLL, BURDICK & MCDONOUGH, focuses on civil litigation matters emphasizing real estate. She graduated from Hastings College of the Law in 1978. Katherine Philippakis has been elected chair of the wine industry practice at FARELLA BRAUN & MARTEL. Philippakis, a partner in the real estate and land use practice groups, has been with the firm since 2001. She received her J.D. from Arizona State University College of Law in 1998. MANATT, PHELPS & PHILLIPS has added Bruce Kelson as a partner. Kelson, who was previously with Shearman & Sterling, focuses on securities litigation and corporate governance matters. He is a 1993 graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law. Anthony Label was appointed an at-large member of the board of directors for the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association. Label, a trial attorney at THE VEEN FIRM, received his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law in 1999. Christine Maloney has joined JACKSON LEWIS as a partner. Maloney, who was previously with Renne Sloan Holtzman Sakai, focuses on employment law. She graduated from University of Oregon School of Law in 1991. Kathleen Strickland has joined ROPERS, MAJESKI, KOHN & BENTLEY as a partner. Strickland, who comes to the firm from Greenberg Traurig, is a trial attorney whose practice includes complex litigation, class actions and mass torts. She received her J.D. from University of San Diego School of Law. PERKINS COIE has added Veronica McGregor as an of counsel. McGregor, who was previously with Morrison & Foerster, is a member of the national business practice. She is a 1998 graduate of Hastings College of the Law. DEWEY & LEBOEUF, formed through the Oct. 1 merger of Dewey Ballantine and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, has formed its new governing body, the Executive Committee. The 22-member group includes James Woods, who is co-chair of the insurance practice and managing partner of the S.F. office. He graduated from UC-Davis’ King Hall School of Law in 1972. EAST BAY Tiffany Shi has joined MELENDEZ JONES & HUNGERFORD in Walnut Creek as an associate. Shi focuses her practice on insurance bad faith, insurance coverage and commercial litigation. She received her J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law in 2004. The Oakland Museum of California honored attorneys Robert Bryan, John Burris and Stuart Hanlon at “The Civil Rights Concert Series and Courage Awards National Tour � A Gospel Idol Tour With a Civil Rights Twist!” on Saturday. The three attorneys, who received Courage Awards, were recognized for the work they’ve done to free the wrongfully convicted. Bryan, a solo practitioner based in San Francisco, graduated from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law in 1967. Burris, a solo based in Oakland, graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1973. Hanlon, a solo based in San Francisco, graduated from Hastings College of the Law in 1975. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOLOMON WARD SEIDENWURM & SMITH has elevated Thomas Landers to partner. Landers, who focuses on business litigation, has been with the firm since 2003. He received his J.D. from University of Southern California Law School in 1999.
