U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan, D.C. Superior Court Chief Judge Rufus King III, and Washington Post Chairman Donald Graham will be panelists next week in a discussion on the role of jurors in the criminal justice system. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Jury Service Appreciation Month, on Oct. 18 the Council for Court Excellence will sponsor a free-of-charge public forum titled “In Your Hands: Perspectives on Jury Duty,” where panelists will tell their personal stories of serving on a jury and discuss issues jurors face. “It is our hope that this program will serve a dual purpose of showing appreciation for those who have served, and inspiring and educating others about such service,” says June Kress, executive director of the council. For 10 years, the group has developed and conducted annual jury service appreciation programs. The event will take place at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. Other panelists will include syndicated columnist Robert Novak and Suzanne Bailey-Jones of the D.C. Superior Court’s Jurors Office.
