CHICAGO Former Illinois Solicitor General Gary Feinerman, 42, has joined Sidley Austin after leaving the Office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan last month. He will be a partner in the Chicago appellate and litigation practices. Feinerman, who was a summer associate at Sidley back in 1989, was also an attorney for crosstown rival Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw before he took the solicitor general position in 2003 and briefly in the early 1990s. In the solicitor general’s office he managed more than 40 attorneys. “I am looking forward to helping to grow the appellate practice nationwide and especially in Chicago,” Feinerman said in a press release. Feinerman said he was drawn partly to the Sidley team because of the leadership of attorney Carter Phillips, who heads the firm’s appellate practice and its Washington office. After earning his law degree from Stanford Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Yale College, he was a law clerk for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court. Feinerman has significant experience arguing and briefing notable matters before federal and Illinois courts. Recent representations include six of the Illinois Supreme Court justices in Thomas v. Page, a state appellate court case that established the judicial deliberation privilege in Illinois.
