The Section of Labor and Employment Law has more than 20,000 members involved in all aspects of labor and employment law, and includes union and employee lawyers, employer lawyers, neutrals, government lawyers and law students. The section’s 18 standing committees publish numerous treatises, including some of the pre-eminent desktop reference works in the field. The section plans to expand its emphasis on continuing legal education with its first annual CLE Conference in Philadelphia from Nov. 7 to Nov. 10. This will include a multitracked curriculum focusing on all aspects of labor and employment law and offering sessions of value regardless of the level of experience of practitioners. More than 240 speakers will present at this conference. The section will continue its numerous outreach projects, including academics, government lawyers and law students. The section works with the ABA Young Lawyers Division and with other sections in the Joint Committee on Employee Benefits. A newly instituted section development fund will offer fellowships to lawyers who need financial assistance in attending the section’s first CLE Conference and a committee midwinter meeting. James R. LaVaute, managing partner of Blitman & King in Syracuse, N.Y., is the incoming chair of the Section of Labor and Employment Law. He represents labor organizations and employee benefit funds. For more information about the section, see www.abanet.org/labor.
