A new firm, AndersonTuell, is moving into lobbying on behalf of nearly a dozen Indian tribes. The Native American-owned shop recently filed its first lobbying registrations with the secretary of the Senate. The registrations were on behalf of a variety of tribes, including the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians, the San Fernando Band of Mission Indians, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and others. The firm will represent the tribes on a wide range of issues, from tribal governance to gambling. Partner Michael Anderson says most of the lobbying will be on behalf of smaller tribes. The new firm wants to closely monitor any legislation related to gambling or Indian health care reauthorization, among other things, this fall. “Second session will be a more active time for tribal governments,” he says. AndersonTuell opened its doors in February, promising to focus primarily on government affairs and tribal counseling. All three of its partners — Anderson, Loretta Tuell, and Derrill Jordon — worked on Indian affairs in various capacities during the Clinton administration.
