CHICAGO — In an effort to counter the high rate at which women of color are leaving large law firms, Katten Muchin Rosenman will for the first time host a day-long program of speakers and workshops focused on giving these women the tools to succeed at the firm. The July 24 event, to be called the Leadership Institute for Women of Color, will be held at the firm’s Chicago office, though attorneys from across the firm are being offered the opportunity to fly in for the program, said Jason Milch, a spokesman for the firm. The firm expects about 42 of its 650 attorneys to attend, he said. Dr. Arin Reeves, a diversity consultant and a co-chair for the American Bar Association’s study on women of color in law last year, will lead the event. Workshops throughout the day will address topics that include networking skills, marketing, internal and external visibility and building support systems. Speakers at the program will include Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Capital Management LLP; Andrea Zopp, Exelon Corp.’s senior vice president of human resources; and Connie Lindsey, an executive vice president at The Northern Trust Co. “With the launch of the Leadership Institute for Women of Color, we are taking the critical next step toward bringing the retention rate for women of color in law firms in line with the majority population in the industry, and we hope other firms will follow suit,” said Leslie Minier, the firm’s chief diversity officer and the creator of the program.
