SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco-based intellectual property and patent specialists Townsend and Townsend and Crew announced it will open its first East Coast office in Washington starting with a stable of seven lawyers. Townsend, a 200-lawyer firm with seven offices, adds a Washington position to give it closer proximity to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the International Trade Commission and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. To staff its D.C. suite, the firm draws three lawyers from Kenyon and Kenyon, Gary Morris, who will run the office, Neil McCarthy and John McGroaty. Two McGuireWoods partners will also join forces at Townsend, Richard Meyers, who served as chair of McGuire’s patent practice, and Jonathan Link, as well as special counsel Andrew Pratt and associate Andrea Tiglio. “Establishing a presence on the East Coast has been a long-stated and important goal for our firm,” said James Gilliland, Jr., Townsend chairman. “This office will also be an important asset for our firm’s European client base and for Townsend’s U.S. clients doing business in Europe.” The D.C. office will have a patent focus with technology expertise in electronics and software, biotechnology and chemistry and medical and mechanical devices.
