SAN FRANCISCO The Nixon Peabody firm may be adding a new moniker green. The 700-lawyer firm recently renovated four floors of its San Francisco office with environmental design in mind and green building techniques. Housed in the existing high-rise One Embarcadero Center, Nixon Peabody used recycled wood floors, countertops from recycled glass chips and plastic bottles, nontoxic paint, dual flush toilet, low-flow water and recycled 75% of the construction waste, according to the firm. Jeffrey Lesk, leader of the firm’s syndication practice, which emphasizes renewable energy tax credits, is leading the green initiative. “In growing our sustainability and clean technology practices, we wanted to both align ourselves with our clients and demonstrate our commitment to the environment,” he said. He said the new “green” office will serve as a model for clients to show that sustainable development is practical and cost-effective. The firm has 90 lawyers in its San Francisco office. The firm has applied for certification from the U.S. Green Building Council under its program for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Brian Smith, spokesman for the environmental group EarthJustice said not a lot of law firms have initiated green construction practices yet. “Good for them,” he said.
