Caitlin J. Halligan, former New York State solicitor general under Attorney General Elliott Spitzer, will head Weil, Gotshal & Manges’ appellate practice group. Halligan is a highly regarded appellate lawyer who as solicitor general, managed 45 appellate attorneys, coordinated the legal positions of the entire attorney general’s office and oversaw the preparation of approximately 120 submissions each month in the federal and state appellate courts. She has served as counsel of record for a party or amicus in more than 40 matters in the U.S. Supreme Court and argued three of those cases before the Supreme Court. Weil Gotshal chairman Stephen J. Dannhauser called Halligan one of the top appellate attorneys in the country. “We believe that Caitlin’s experience will be instrumental not only in building on the existing strengths of our Appellate practice, but in successfully representing clients in their most complex appellate matters,” Dannhauser said. Halligan graduated cum laude from Princeton University and magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was managing editor of the Georgetown Law Review. She clerked for U.S. Circuit Judge Patricia M. Wald on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Justice Stephen G. Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court.
