Sidley Austin is opening an office in Sydney, Australia, and they’ve lured Robert Meyers away from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman to do it. The move appears to spell the end of Pillsbury’s Sydney office, which was headed by Meyers and staffed by three associates and one counsel, according to the firm’s Web site. “Their office here was basically Bob and his group,” said Craig Chapman, a London-based Sidley partner who is helping to set up the office. “We expect to take over most of their operations.” Offers have been made to the associates as well, he said. Pillsbury declined to comment on the fate of its Sydney office. Meyers, who has developed a strong practice representing companies and underwriters in IPOs and other deals that often range into the billions, originally came to Pillsbury in 2000 from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He’ll be bringing his whole book of business to Sidley, Chapman said. Sidley already does work in Australia, representing underwriters like Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan in deals, according to Chapman, who heads the firm’s European capital markets practice and handles a good portion of the firm’s Australia work from London. Chapman called the Australian market a “very active” one for foreign capital markets lawyers and said the firm hopes to take advantage of that with its new office. The new office is set to open May 1.
