Foley & Lardner has applied to open a Shanghai office to handle intellectual property licensing and litigation. The office would be the firm’s second in Asia since opening Tokyo in 2003. The firm filed an application with the Ministry of Justice of the People’s Republic of China to approve the Shanghai office. In preparation, Foley & Lardner has hired Catherine Sun, a former partner who lead the China intellectual property practice in the Shanghai office of New York-based Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Sun, who will serve as chairwoman of Foley & Lardner’s Asia practice, is temporarily working out of the firm’s New York office during the application process. Joining Sun in the Shanghai office would be Stephen A. Bent, Hal Wegner, Zhu “Julie” Lee, Ken Duck, Tianjun “T.J.” Hou and Xuequing “Linda” Ji. The firm anticipates working with U.S., Chinese and other clients in the life sciences, manufacturing, automotive and high-tech industries. Most of the practice would focus on intellectual property issues surrounding software, counterfeiting, venture capital, mergers and acquisitions and technology transfer. Additionally, Sun and two other lawyers, Ken Suddleson and James Nguyen, have been retained to serve as international legal counsel for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which takes place in Shanghai in October. The team will negotiate new media deals and agreements with entertainers at the opening ceremony.
