But now Detective Michael Irving, an 18-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department currently on paid administrative leave, has been indicted in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on nine counts of tax evasion, false claims, and fraud. According to the indictment, filed by the Justice Department, Irving, who recently earned between $136,000 and $181,000, used various methods to withhold tax payments. In 2002, for instance, he claimed a $32,000 refund from the Internal Revenue Service. And between 2000 and 2002, he claimed more than $35,000 in refunds from the District of Columbia. A police spokesman declined to comment; Irving’s lawyer, David Schertler, could not be reached for comment.
