Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg took the unusual step Wednesday of reading, from the bench, a summary of her dissent in the Court's ruling on upholding the federal ban on "partial birth" abortion. Responding to the majority's contention that women might regret their physician-counseled choice of the procedure, she said: "This way of protecting women recalls ancient notions about women's place in society and under the Constitution -- ideas that have long since been discredited."
