SAN FRANCISCO – California-based Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Mallory & Natsis has hired former U.S. Attorney Kevin V. Ryan to join its litigation group in the San Francisco office. Ryan, a former state judge prior to his 2002 appointment by President George W. Bush as top prosecutor in San Francisco, will handle regulatory litigation before the Justice Department, Securities & Exchange Commission, environment and insurance litigation, according to Brian Leck, managing partner for the 230-lawyer law firm headquartered in Los Angeles. Ryan, whose management in Northern California has been criticized inside and outside his office, was one of eight U.S. Attorneys fired by the Justice Department in December in what has become a political controversy over six of the eight that Democrats assert were filed for political reasons. Leck said his firm did considerable background checking prior to making the offer. “Being a U.S. attorney is a political position. We did a lot of due diligence. We are satisfied that Kevin is a top rate individual and we have no concerns about his abilities,” Leck said. Ryan, who began his career as an Alameda County prosecutor, has “expressed a strong interest in developing a civil litigation practice” Leck said. Allen Matkins, with six offices all in California, is best known for its real estate practice but also has specialties in corporate, bankruptcy, labor and employment on behalf of management, as well as corporate and real estate tax practices.
