Jurors in the Midwest's first trial over Vioxx on Tuesday cleared Merck & Co. in the 2003 fatal heart attack of 52-year-old Patty Schwaller. A jury in Edwardsville, Ill., sided with Merck, which had argued that Schwaller's weight and other health issues might have posed risks that better explain her death. The victory was Merck's 10th in 15 cases that have been tried in litigation over the drug Merck pulled off the market in 2004 after research showed it increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
