Jeffrey Liss, co-managing partner of DLA Piper in the United States, passed away March 17 at Johns Hopkins Hospital from pancreatic cancer. Liss, 56, was an associate and later partner at Wald, Harkrader & Ross in Washington, before joining Piper & Marbury in 1985. “Jeff has been the heart and soul and moral compass of the firm, and he was the embodiment of the word partner. He will be with us every day. His fingerprints are all over the firm,” said Lee Miller, joint CEO of DLA Piper. Liss served on DLA Piper’s global board and its U.S. executive and policy committees. Throughout his tenure, Liss helped lead the firm through a tremendous period of growth and global expansion, transforming it from a regional Baltimore-Maryland law firm to an international firm with 63 offices in 24 countries. He also served in the public sector as a Special Government Employee assisting the Office of the White House Counsel in several cabinet-level confirmations and served as an advisor to former Vice President Al Gore and to former Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.). A litigator, Liss was recognized as an authority on environmental and insurance coverage law. “Jeff was a great lawyer and a good friend. All of us at DLA Piper will miss him terribly, in both a professional and a personal sense. He represented the best of what our country and our profession has to offer,” said Former Majority Leader George Mitchell, (D-Maine), and chairman of the firm. Liss is survived by his wife, Susan, who served as Tipper Gore’s chief of staff during Al Gore’s vice presidency and is currently the chief Washington representative of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, and his daughter Joanna Liss Strait, and son Harrison Liss, and his son-in-law Ari Strait.
