Each year at this time, when we present our compilation of the newest partners at New Jersey law firms, we get a healthy reminder of how the more things change, the more they don’t. For one thing, what is a partner? Most large firms today are organized as professional corporations, professional associations, limited liability companies or limited liability partnerships. They are made up of hierarchies of directors, shareholders, members and professional staff, each with carefully tailored responsibilities and compensation schemes. Even in firms that cling to the term “partner,” there are different ranks and degrees of consanguinity. Yet, making partner still means something quite unmistakable. It is the point where the firm and the lawyer marry their fortunes to each other, at least for the foreseeable future (which is the most that parties to any marriage can do). And it is the point where the lawyer takes on a leadership role that will continue to accrete and become more vital to the firm. The 149 lawyers featured here all made the grade in the past 12 months since our last yearbook was published. A few observations always leap from these pages. We notice, for example, that 89 of the new partners – 60 percent – were elevated within their firms. Lateral partnerships are still in the minority. This proportion has held steady for the past three years at least, which is a sign that firms are making good with efforts to retain and promote senior lawyers. Conversely, it means that lawyers willing to stay the course can look forward to advancement. The data continue to show that recruitment efforts are not localized. N.J. law school graduates comprise 37.6 percent of the new partners, about par with last year’s 36.5 percent. Roughly 45 percent of the new partners list New Jersey as their place of birth, compared with 49 percent last year. There are proportionately fewer women partners in this year’s group: 26 percent, compared with 29 percent last year. And although we did not ask for racial or ethnic identities, it is fairly noticeable that there are only a handful of minorities represented. That, however, is the subject of a separate annual survey. As their biographies show, all of these lawyers have strong skill sets that bear demonstrably on their firms’ abilities to serve an ever-more-variegated clientele. Regardless of the corporate terminology, we’ll keep on calling them partners. - Ronald J.
