A team of wind power attorneys has set sail for the Los Angeles office of Chadbourne & Parke where they will be partners. Edward Zaelke and Adam Umanoff hail from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where Zaelke was head of the renewable energy practice group. They left this month because Chadbourne is a better fit, representing more independent power companies in contrast with Morgan, Lewis’ emphasis on utilities, Umanoff said. The duo focuses on wind power and other alternative energy sources, with a client list that includes Clipper Windpower, a company focused on wind energy technology, Caithness Energy, an independent power producer, and Airtricity, a renewable energy company. With the move, “we’re going to avoid a number of conflicts,” Umanoff said. Zaelke and Umanoff have worked together on and off since the 1980s when they were both attorneys at Morrison & Foerster. Umanoff went in-house to work as the general counsel and later as president and chief executive officer of Enron Wind Corp. He joined Morgan, Lewis about two years ago where he reunited with Zaelke, but found neither of them were quite comfortable. “It wasn’t until we had been there awhile that we understood their utility focus,” Umanoff said. “It was a bit of a square peg in a round hole. This is the right fit.” New York City’s Chadbourne already has a strong presence in the renewable energy field, working on wind farm deals in the U.S. and abroad.
