LOS ANGELES � Latham & Watkins and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher have announced they raised first-year associate salaries to $160,000 in New York, matching other Los Angeles-based firms in pay. In an e-mailed statement on Friday, a Latham spokesman said, “As a leading global law firm with a diverse national presence in the U.S., Latham & Watkins regularly evaluates its associate compensation. We can confirm that the firm has increased its first-year associate salaries in its New York office to $160,000. Annual salaries for first-year associates in the firm’s other U.S. offices will be increased to $145,000.” A firm spokesman refused to elaborate beyond the statement. The increases are effective beginning on Jan. 1, 2007. The announcements by Gibson and Latham come days after several other Los Angeles-based firms raised associate salaries in the same manner by distinguishing New York pay from that in other offices. Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker announced today that first-year associates in its nationwide offices, other than New York and Stamford, Conn., have been raised to $145,000. New York and Stamford associates previously were raised to $160,000 at the firm. Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton announced raising first-year associates salaries to $160,000 in New York and $145,000 in California, according to previous reports. Last week, O’Melveny & Myers announced it too would raise first-year associate salaries to $160,000 in New York and $145,000 in California. Los Angeles-based Quinn, Emanuel, Urquhart, Oliver & Hedges, which has an office in New York, announced earlier this month it would raise first-year associate pay to $160,000 in all its offices. Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has not announced any associate increases.
