Longtime D.C. watchdog Dorothy Brizill hasn’t wasted time making friends in Mayor Adrian Fenty’s new administration. Brizill, who has tangled with three prior mayors and got former Mayor Anthony Williams’ name thrown off the 2002 Democratic primary ballot for petition-signature violations, is involved in a war of words with Peter Nickles, Fenty’s general counsel. In a Jan. 10 letter, Nickles chided Brizill, stating she needed to be more respectful in her dealings with the communications staff. The one-paragraph letter triggered a two-page broadside from Brizill, who stated Nickles was making “baseless assertions.” She also wrote that Fenty’s staff has not responded to her numerous public-information requests, including the budget for all inaugural activities; the salaries of all transition staff, Cabinet appointees, and mayoral staff; and a detailed accounting of the cost of Fenty’s birthday party at St. Coletta’s School and how it was paid for. Nickles wouldn’t elaborate on the reasons for his letter but says staffers are responding to Brizill’s document requests.
