In England the name Giovanni di Stefano conjures up images of Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein, men this Italian-born lawyer has counted as clients. Such work has won di Stefano the moniker “the devil’s advocate.” But when di Stefano called U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan’s chambers on Nov. 27, the judge wasn’t impressed. Di Stefano claimed to represent Hussein in a case filed by an Iraqi writer who claims his father was tortured under the Baathist dictator’s former regime. Di Stefano wanted to make a formal motion in the case. Sullivan refused to talk to him and denied a faxed request because di Stefano is not a member of the D.C. Bar.
