Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw appointed Kenneth Geller, the partner in charge of its D.C. office, to join its new tripartite management team, which will take over when Chairman Ty Fahner steps down next spring. Chicago-based partner James Holzhauer, an appellate litigator and the firm’s general counsel, will become chairman. Geller and Paul Maher, the senior partner in the firm’s London office, will serve as vice chairmen. The trio will take office on June 1, 2007. The creation of the so-called office of the chairman is part of a strategy to further the firm’s global integration. “It’s sending the message to the market that this is an international law firm,” Geller says. The appointments mark the first time Mayer, Brown has chosen partners based outside of Chicago as chairmen, he adds. An appellate litigator who has made frequent appearances before the U.S. Supreme Court, Geller has been head of the D.C. office since 1995. He says he’ll relinquish that role once he takes over as vice chairman, but he notes that the firm has yet to decide on a replacement. Before joining the firm, Geller served as deputy solicitor general in the Justice Department and as an assistant special prosecutor in the Watergate Special Prosecution Force.
