To help its poor clients who often cannot afford transportation, the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia is expanding its services into Historic Anacostia. Legal Aid attorneys will hold office hours in the Southeast neighborhood on Tuesdays from 1 to 5 p.m. at 2041 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. S.E. The nonprofit group Advocates for Justice and Education agreed to provide space in its office for the attorneys, who will handle housing and public-benefit cases and conduct client-education sessions. “We’ve made it a real priority in the last three years to place our services in the community,” says Legal Aid Executive Director Jonathan Smith. “Those folks who are living in extreme poverty and who rely on public benefits have a hard time even making it across town.” Besides its headquarters in Northwest Washington, Legal Aid also has offices in the Domestic Violence Intake Center at Greater Southeast Community Hospital and at the Town Hall Education Arts & Recreation Campus.
