Crowell & Moring added to its environmental practice, scoring its second Environmental Protection Agency official in as many months. Chet Thompson, former deputy general counsel of the EPA, will join his former boss, ex-EPA general counsel Ann Klee, who announced her return to the firm in August. Thompson, who worked at Collier Shannon Scott before his stint at the EPA, expects to focus primarily on global warming and Clean Air Act issues. Steven Quarles, chairman of Crowell’s environment and natural resources group, says the additions are part of a three-year initiative to strengthen the firm’s environmental bench. . . . Thomas Boyd, a partner in Alston & Bird’s legislative and public policy practice group, was nominated on Sept. 20 by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to serve on the Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee for the Department of Homeland Security. The committee meets four times a year and prepares recommendations to Chertoff regarding the acquisition of data and other privacy-related issues. . . . Arnold & Porter’s D.C. and New York offices topped the list of family-friendly firms in a new study released last week by Yale Law Women, a student association at Yale Law School. The study considered firm policies on family leave, child care facilities, alternative work schedules, and percentage of female attorneys. The D.C. offices of WilmerHale and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker almost made the top five. . . . Douglas Kremer has taken over the top marketing and strategy job at Venable. Before joining, Kremer held senior marketing and leadership posts at American Express, Citicorp, T. Rowe Price, J.P. Morgan, and CIGNA.
