Since 1999, when he paid $800 million to buy the Washington Redskins and the team’s stadium, Daniel Snyder has spent more than $100 million to enhance FedEx Field, adding a windscreen, glass handrails, and escalators. But the stadium in Landover, Md., still doesn’t provide closed captioning of its public-address system. According to a class action filed by the National Association of the Deaf, deaf and hard-of-hearing fans don’t receive public-safety messages, referee penalty calls, or other announcements. The suit, filed Aug. 31 in U.S. District Court in Maryland, claims the Redskins and FedEx Field are violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. “They certainly had notice this closed captioning was desired by their fans,” says Joseph Espo, a Baltimore attorney representing the association. Redskins spokesman Karl Swanson says public-safety messages can be typed manually onto the Jumbotron screens, but technical problems have prevented closed captioning on the giant screens and no NFL team currently provides the service. The Redskins do have assisted-listening devices for hard-of-hearing fans, he notes.
