Perkins Coie will open its second China office in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, an area some refer to as the Chinese Silicon Valley. That location is not where U.S.-based firms typically set up shop in Shanghai, but Perkins wanted to be near many of its major pharmaceutical and technology clients, said James Zhu, a Los Angeles associate who works with the firm’s China business. “We believe in the Silicon Valley model where you have to be walking distance to your clients,” he said. “We are very proud to be there it was a strategic decision.” The Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park was established more than a decade ago as an area designated for technology, and it now houses hundreds of domestic and international companies. With the opening of the new office, Perkins Coie will have a presence in both Shanghai and Beijing. Even though the firm already had license for a Beijing office, establishing an office in another city requires a separate application, a process that took about a year. The firm received that license at a ceremony in Beijing Wednesday. The new Shanghai office will be staffed by attorneys Fabiola Suwanto and Zhaohui “Zoe” Wang and will service both U.S. and Chinese clients. One of the chief focuses will be intellectual property matters, Zhu said.
