Barrett Burke Wilson Castle Daffin & Frappier has selected Mary A. Daffin as managing partner of the firm. Daffin lauds her colleagues at Barrett Burke for always believing that women should have significant roles in the firm’s operation and leadership. “It sends a strong signal to the legal profession,” she says of her selection. “If there are no women or minorities [in leadership] … look to see why that hasn’t happened.” Daffin, who is African-American, believes that being good at what you do is what makes women and minority attorneys successful in a profession that is largely male — and largely white. As of Jan. 1, only 6 percent of U.S. partners at Texas’ 25 largest firms were minorities, and 17.6 percent were women. Daffin says she hasn’t run across any other African-American female managing partners in Texas. “I’ve [looked] for them, but I haven’t been able to find any,” she says. “I’d love to have a network of other African-American women who do this.” Daffin replaces Michael C. Barrett, who had been managing partner of the firm since it formed in 1990. Prior to becoming managing partner, Daffin headed the firm’s bankruptcy practice. Addison, Texas-based Barrett Burke, with 400 attorneys in four Texas offices, represents major national mortgage lenders, some of which have included Bank of America Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co., Daffin says.
