Seven hearing-impaired plaintiffs have scored a victory in their disabilities suit against Laurel Regional Hospital in Laurel, Md. The suit alleged the hospital’s lack of qualified sign-language interpreters or adequate communication technology left them unable to communicate with doctors and staff in urgent medical situations, forcing them to communicate through written messages and lip reading. A July 17 consent decree mandates improvements in the hospital’s equipment, policies, and procedures, including upgrades to its Video Interpreting Service. Lewis Wiener, a litigation partner at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, worked on the lawsuit pro bono with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.
