Hogan & Hartson has long been a relative garden spot for that unappreciated species, the D.C. deal-maker. Which is why it came as a surprise that three partners in its private equity group are leaving for Boston-based financial services firm Goodwin Procter. J. Hovey Kemp says the move means the three can build up a private equity operation in the District from the ground up. Partners Christopher Hagan and James Hutchinson are also moving to Goodwin. Over the past eight years, the trio has generated more than $60 million in revenue, according to Kemp, with clients such as Thoma Cressey Equity Partners, Grotech Capital Group, and Arlington Capital Partners. The additions come a year and a half after Goodwin’s merger with litigation-heavy Shea & Gardner. “It’s the first in a series of steps that we are taking to expand the Washington office,” says John Aldock, chair of Goodwin’s 85-lawyer D.C. office. The firm is looking to grow real estate and intellectual property practices here as well.
