Insuring the future of its law department, RLI Corporation announced in February that it had hired Daniel Kennedy as its new vice president and general counsel. Kennedy, 41, replaced Mary Beth Nebel, who retired from RLI to open a bookstore. Kennedy comes to the Peoria, Illinois based company with 16 years of corporate experience representing public companies. Most recently, from 1997 to early 2006, Kennedy worked as a partner in the Atlanta office of Hunton & Williams. There he concentrated on corporate securities, mergers and acquisitions, and governance issues. Recruiting firm Spencer Stuart alerted him to the job opportunity at RLI. A specialty insurance company, RLI offers property and casualty coverage and surety bonds. It operates nationwide from 23 locations. Kennedy says he was attracted to RLI because of the company’s solid growth and also because of its midwestern location. Both he and his wife, Cynthia, a partner at Powell Goldstein, are Michigan natives who look forward to moving from the South back to their midwestern roots. Even his three young children, Kennedy says, are enthusiastic about the move: “They like the idea of a change and a smaller town.”
