When Surescripts, LLC, started out five years ago, its prescription for success didn’t include having a lawyer on staff. But that changed, and in February it hired Paul Uhrig, 44, as its first in-house attorney. Uhrig’s title is general counsel and executive vice president in charge of corporate development. The Alexandria, Virginia based company is the largest network provider of electronic prescribing services. Its clients include CVS Corporation and Rite Aid Corporation. Uhrig first linked up with SureScripts in 2001, when it was founded by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the National Community Pharmacists Association. The NACDS was a client of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, where Uhrig was a partner from 2000 to 2004. “NACDS needed someone with a corporate background in health care,” Uhrig says. “So they came to me. And I have represented them ever since.” Uhrig has spent his entire legal career concentrating on the health care industry. The area interests him, he says, because of its multidisciplinary character: “It’s a marriage of the regulatory environment with corporate deals.” Uhrig took SureScripts with him when he jumped ship to Gardner Carton & Douglas in June 2004. He became vice chairman of the firm’s corporate department in 2005. A year later, the SureScripts team decided to bring him on board full-time. As part of his new job, Uhrig will also oversee federal legislative affairs of the company. He says he’s looking forward to spending some time with all those congressional representatives on Capitol Hill. “Being a lifelong Washingtonian,” he says, “I am thrilled to get involved with that aspect of the practice.”
