Bracewell & Giuliani has recruited the former head of the U.S. corporate practice of British legal giant Linklaters. Mark Palmer and two former Linklaters associates, Jonathan Gill and Robb Tretter, will join the 22-lawyer New York office of Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani as partners. Palmer will become head of the firm’s New York corporate practice. The group is one of the more significant to have joined the New York office of the firm formerly known as Bracewell & Patterson. The 400-lawyer firm made a splashy launch in Manhattan last year by bringing aboard as a name partner former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani but its office in the city has remained relatively small. In a statement Tuesday, Giuliani said the three new partners brought to the firm “a solid record of providing M&A and corporate advice to major financial institutions, investment funds and other prominent global organizations.” Palmer had joined Linklaters less than two years ago, starting as bankruptcy partner before moving to the corporate practice. He was also briefly a partner at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan as well as general counsel to financial software maker TIBCO. Paul Wickes, Linklaters’ U.S. managing partner, said the firm was sorry to see the three go, but he noted that Gill and Tretter had not been offered partnerships and the practice headed by Palmer had been a small one. The firm, one of London’s Magic Circle of leading corporate firms, has been eager to expand its 105-lawyer New York office.
