Life sciences lawyers with science degrees are not unusual. But far fewer can boast serious time as research scientists, complete with papers on molecular biology to their credit. Richard Peet can. Before embracing the law, Peet worked for the Department of Microbiology at Free University in Amsterdam and Sandoz Crop Protection. “He has a rather unique pedigree,” says John Davenport, general manager of global agribusiness Bayer CropScience. “You just don’t find a lot of people like that out there.” And Gray Young, associate general counsel for another international agribusiness player, J.R. Simplot Co., simply calls Peet “pre-eminent.” Now a partner in the D.C. office of Foley & Lardner, Peet chairs the firm’s chemical and pharmaceutical practice and its international business practice. He specializes in patent procurements and enforcement, as well as licensing and joint venture deals, in the areas of biotechnology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. In pursuing patent enforcement litigation, he also advises on global patent strategy. His client list boasts companies both large and small, many with interests in innovative plant technology. They include ArborGen, Bayer CropScience, Brassica Protection Products, Chiron Corp., Pioneer Hi-Bred International, and J.R. Simplot. “I can only say that, literally, our company would not exist without the expertise and advice of Richard,” says Antony Talalay, president of Brassica. “He saw things in investigation that could be patented that could provide for the company. He’s guided us through the process with a good eye to our legal and commercial interests.” Brassica, a biotech company based in Baltimore, develops antioxidant-rich foods, including sulforaphane-rich BroccoSprouts and Brassica teas. Peet, 52, says that working with companies as diverse as Bayer and Brassica “is a lot of fun.” He adds, “You build personal relationships with your clients and can be very intimately involved with the success of a company.” The quality of those personal relationships is another reason that clients hold Peet in high regard. “What sets him apart is that he’s extremely patient and personable with the people he works with,” says Young of J.R. Simplot. “He will go the extra mile to help us with an issue. He initiates phone conversation to check in and know what’s going on.” In addition to his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California at Berkeley, Peet earned a J.D. from Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law in 1994. He actually started at Foley in 1991 as a nonlawyer patent agent. He has also served as a patent examiner in microbiology for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and he has taught intellectual property classes at George Mason University. And why did he choose to practice law? “I liked working at the nexus of business law and science,” says Peet. “That’s what got me into the business.”
