The kerfuffle over a Dubai company’s contract to manage U.S. ports revealed more than a little hostility in Congress toward the idea of foreign control over American assets. So when French telecom giant Alcatel proposed a $14.1 billion takeover of New Jersey’s Lucent Technologies Inc., the two companies quickly hurled fists of cash at D.C. lawyers and lobbyists to head off any government opposition. WilmerHale’s Jamie Gorelick, Reginald Brown, and Stephen Preston have been hired by Lucent to help get regulatory approval, and Alcatel has retained Ivan Schlager of the D.C. office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Patton Boggs’ Jonathan Yarowski and Benjamin Ginsberg and fellow lobbyists from the Duberstein Group are working Capitol Hill. Of course, when it comes to actually handling the transaction, there’s nary a Washington firm in sight: Skadden is doing Alcatel’s deal work and New York’s Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz is repping Lucent.
