Conventional wisdom says bigger is better, but not every attorney in Washington buys that formula. Three attorneys from Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton have left to form a partnership specializing in antitrust work. With clients drawn mainly from the financial world, the attorneys at Doyle, Barlow & Mazard believe they can be more efficient without the overhead of a national firm. “We quite frankly thought we could make more money out on our own,” says Robert Doyle, the lead partner, who has been at two other firms — Arent Fox and Powell Goldstein — since leaving the Federal Trade Commission in 1997. He is joined by Andre Barlow and Camelia Mazard. And Walter Raheb, head of government affairs at Thelen Reid & Priest, also jumped ship recently. He left with staffer Melissa Whittingham and lobbyist Stephen Whitaker to join fellow Thelen Reid alum and lobbyist Richard Roberts, who’s renamed his shop Roberts, Raheb & Gradler.
