Luckily the D.C. Court’s budget request could be summed up in two words, because that was about all the time they had. About 20 minutes after the March 8 budget hearing before the Senate appropriations subcommittee on D.C. began, it was over — a victim of seven scheduled floor votes on other issues. But D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Eric Washington did find time to briefly outline the court’s budget request and plead his case for an additional $23 million above the president’s proposed budget to cover skyrocketing costs on the renovation of the historic Old Courthouse. D.C. Superior Court Chief Judge Rufus King III used his time to reiterate the request, limiting his remarks to just two words. Or as he told committee Chairman Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), “Well, one hyphenated word and one other word — twenty-three million.” Brownback’s two-word response: “Message received.” Court officials will get one more chance to plead their case at a House budget hearing scheduled for March 29.
