When Asa Hutchinson joined Venable last March, the firm trumpeted how his experience as undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security would help him lead their practice group devoted to that agency. But Venable’s big catch has recently escaped. Earlier this month, Hutchinson, a former Republican congressman from Arkansas, left the firm to work full time on a bid to become governor of his home state. He is the second former member of Congress the firm has lost in recent months. In November, former Rep. James Rogan (R-Calif.) left for Preston Gates & Ellis. Though Hutchinson’s time was brief, William Coston, Venable’s D.C. managing partner, says the hire was worthwhile. “It was anticipated that at some point he would want to devote all his time to campaigning. We were happy to have him as a partner and wish him well as a candidate,” says Coston. So is Hutchinson soliciting donations from his old firm? Says Coston: “I think people are voluntarily donating to his campaign.”
