The Supreme Court usually doesn’t make a good venue for celebrity spotting. But on Feb. 28, lines formed around the block as members of the public waited for seats to watch oral arguments in Marshall v. Marshall, aka the Anna Nicole Smith case. Smith, a one-time Playboy model and topless dancer, was dressed modestly and seated deep in the public section of the Court as the justices debated the legal issues involved in her dispute over the estate of her late billionaire husband, J. Howard Marshall II. Seasoned lawyers found reasons to cast their eyes in her direction, and the media section was full of newcomers from entertainment channels with a sudden interest in the interplay between federal bankruptcy and state probate court jurisdiction. Also in the audience was the late Justice Thurgood Marshall’s widow, Cissy, and son Thurgood Marshall Jr., a partner at Bingham McCutchen. “She keeps a pretty close watch on the advance sheets,” said Marshall Jr. with a smile.
