When Matthew Nolan joined Miller & Chevalier in 1998, the firm’s international trade practice was only about a dozen lawyers. Now, the practice he once chaired is 40 strong, but Nolan, a former member of the firm’s executive committee, is no longer among them. Last week he left for Arent Fox, where he joins a group of old friends, including Matthew Clark, chairman of the firm’s 12-attorney international trade group. Nolan, 47, who brings with him Miller partner Myles Getlan and a few million dollars in business, says the move wasn’t prompted by more money. “I could have gone to another place and gotten a higher salary,” he says. “I chose it for the future potential of building a practice.” Samuel Maruca, Miller & Chevalier’s chairman, says he is sorry to see the two go. Meanwhile, the trade winds are also blowing over at WilmerHale, where Robert Novick, former general counsel in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, chairs the firm’s international trade practice. Last week the firm brought in David Weller, a former U.S. trade representative for China.
