On K Street, one shop’s misfortune is another’s gain. Terry Haines, a top financial services hired gun for the past two and a half years at the now-defunct Alexander Strategy Group, is joining Pennsylvania-based Buchanan Ingersoll’s D.C. office. “We have a very significant Sarbanes-Oxley practice, and he helped write it,” says Ronald Platt, head of Buchanan’s lobbying practice. Haines, 48, is the first of the ASG lobbyists to find a new home. He spent his time at ASG shilling for clients such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the American Bankers Association. Haines says he expects to continue working with many of his clients from ASG, but wouldn’t specify which clients he has retained. Platt says he didn’t have any trepidation in hiring Haines despite his connection to lobbyists such as Edward Buckham and Tony Rudy, who are embroiled in the Jack Abramoff scandal. “I don’t see the baggage,” says Platt. “The facts are very simple: Terry’s from Pittsburgh. He’s from western Pennsylvania, where the firm started. [He] knows the history of the firm.”
