Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call filed a trademark infringement suit this month in D.C.’s federal court against Roll Call Strategies, a lobby shop based in Frankfort, Ky. The paper says it is trying to safeguard its trademarked name and status as “an impartial newspaper that neutrally reports about politics, politicians, and political campaigns.” Roll Call Strategies, founded by John McCarthy, a former head of the Kentucky Republican Party, and Jeffrey Speaks, a former Hill staffer, registered in September to lobby Congress on behalf of seven clients. The Jan. 12 complaint includes a breach-of-contract claim, stating the two parties appeared to avoid a legal showdown in November when Roll Call Strategies acquiesced, saying it would become RC Strategies. But the Kentucky lobby shop failed to make the name change, the suit alleges. Roll Call‘s attorney, Adam Chud of Goodwin Procter, declines comment. Neither Roll Call Strategies nor its lawyer, Lisa Conrad of Louisville’s Stoll Keenon Ogden, returned calls.
