Normally, a former assistant U.S. attorney from New Jersey moving to Washington, D.C., would hardly be headline-worthy. But this is David Lat we are talking about, and the formerly anonymous author of the dishy Underneath Their Robes Web log, who hid behind a fake female identity online, managed to turn the federal judiciary into a font of juicy gossip. And Lat is not heading to some humdrum D.C. law firm or government perch; instead he’ll take over the Wonkette blog that dishes gossip about the Washington political and media scenes. Why make the move and replace the almost-ubiquitous Ana Marie Cox? “Why not?” Lat replied in an e-mail late last week from an undisclosed overseas location. “Our nation’s capital is a fabulous city, and I’m looking forward to exploring all it has to offer, such as free museums.” He adds, “I have tons of friends in Washington — a city composed of lawyers, run by lawyers, and meant for lawyers.” Lat loved New York, he wrote, but “How could I pass up the chance to poke fun at people and get paid for it, all without having to leave my apartment or change out of my pajamas?” Telling us more than we wanted to know, Lat added, “And yes, I do wear pajamas.”
