Title: General Counsel Location: Irving Age: 47 True Believer It’s not difficult to be passionately against drunk driving. What is difficult is meeting the legal needs of the national headquarters and 600-plus chapters and state offices of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which Janice Stitziel Bloom has accomplished for three years. Her personal mission: “Every donor dollar that I can save the organization in legal expenses, that’s one more dollar that can be spent on the organization’s mission.” That dedication, even though Bloom started at MADD part time, is what former CEO Dean Wilkerson remembers most about her. “It wasn’t just a job for her. She was a true believer in what we were trying to accomplish,” says Wilkerson, now executive director of the American College of Emergency Physicians. After about six months on the job, Bloom says she realized she couldn’t keep all the balls in the air if she left every day at 2 p.m. She met with Wilkerson and told him the position needed to be full time, even if it meant hiring someone else. He says the choice was clear. And when Bloom wanted to hire an associate, he approved that, too. “MADD is a lot stronger today from a legal standpoint under Janice than we had been for years before that,” he says. Current CEO Charles A. Hurley calls MADD one of the world’s smallest conglomerates, with only one corporate entity and two lawyers to represent headquarters along with U.S. and international affiliates. Bloom’s knowledge of the law and the intricacies of MADD are irreplaceable, he says, even with her short tenure. This is actually Bloom’s second tenure with MADD. She served for two years, then left for family reasons in May 2003. A year later, when her replacement moved on, MADD wooed her back. Hurley, who was an advisory board member during Bloom’s first turn at the organization, was thrilled that she was back when he took over as CEO this year. “She keeps us not only legal, but in the place we want to be,” Hurley says, referring to across-the-board best practices. Bloom says in addition to contracts, employment law and trademark issues, she regularly fields, “What do you think about this?” questions regarding all facets of the organization. “Every day I get things that really are not so much legal as they are internal positions, and how best to do something,” she says. Hurley says one of Bloom’s unique qualities is her ability to speak on an equal level with all of her clients, from the chairman of the board to the clients most affected by drunk driving. “She has to deal with very senior people from the corporate world down to grieving moms. One of her strongest characteristics is she deals with them in the same way,” he says. Bloom says she believes it is “unacceptable for any lawyer to talk down to [her] client. Often the legal solution can be found in listening to the client and engaging the client in an exchange of ideas.”
