Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf trounced soccer legend George Weah in Liberia’s election earlier this month, becoming Africa’s first female president. Behind the scenes, Johnson-Sirleaf’s campaign got a boost from adviser Larry Gibson, a law professor at the University of Maryland and of counsel at Shapiro Sher Guinot & Sandler in Baltimore. Gibson, who was Maryland state chair for Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign and who managed three campaigns for former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke, went to Liberia earlier this spring and interviewed hundreds of voters to gauge Johnson-Sirleaf’s chances. He then went to China to oversee the production and shipment of 4 million campaign stickers, 850,000 posters, and 600 banners. In August he flew to Liberia again to train Johnson-Sirleaf’s staff during the first week of the campaign. “The objective is for Africans to have elections where nobody gets killed,” Gibson says. “If I could help a little bit, that’s enough.”
