Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em. That’s the adage Robert Bonner embraced before coming to Washington four years ago — and one he will take with him when he leaves his post as commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Nov. 23. “I always thought when you leave Washington, it should be on your own terms,” says Bonner. “I’ve been going a mile a minute since the morning of 9/11.” Bonner will be heading straight back to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, where he was a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office, supervising major white-collar-crime investigations. “I haven’t talked to any other law firm. There’s no reason to,” says Bonner, who will split his time between L.A. and D.C. “It was a logical place for me to return.” In addition to white-collar crime, Bonner will focus on homeland security policy issues.
