The few remaining partners from Coudert Brothers’ D.C. office have found homes. Last week former D.C. and Moscow managing partner Richard Dean and corporate partner Jonathan Cahn opted to join Baker & McKenzie, along with four associates and two paralegals. Both focused their practices on energy investment in the former Soviet Union. Dean opened Coudert’s Moscow office in 1988. He says he stayed at the firm until the bitter end in an effort to hold his group together. That effort was dealt a blow when all of Coudert’s Moscow partners opted to join Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe this spring. Dean says he had been a proponent within Coudert for a firmwide merger with Baker this summer, an idea resisted by some in Coudert’s partnership. “A lot of guys said, Look, this isn’t the Baker that we thought about 10 or 15 years ago,’ ” Dean says. ” This is a very dynamic place.’ “
