Summary Judgment is published bimonthly and takes a look at books likely to be of interest to those in the legal profession. This time we review Jon Eisenberg’s book on the Terri Schiavo case and the issue of a person’s right to die, a novel about cynical Dallas lawyers, an analysis of granting clemency and a look at the history of the U.S. Supreme Court.
“Terri”: Some Dare Call It Conspiracy Reviewer Lawrence J. Siskind says Jon Eisenberg’s analysis of the legal, ethical and religious aspects of the Schiavo case is refreshingly evenhanded. But when his book moves into the political world, its in-tellectual wheels fall off. Subtlety Evades Dallas Legal Whodunit Reviewer Kathy McBride says Mark Gimenez’s novel “The Color of Law” is a cynical look at Dallas law firm life in which the protagonist idolizes Atticus Finch. ‘Mercy’ Dissects Clemency Powers Reviewer Pam Smith calls Austin Sarat’s work scrutinizing the rare practice governors possess to stop executions “engaging and enlightening,” but a little quote-heavy. Trivia, Traditions Enrich High Court Tome Reviewer Theodore Pollack says the 1,239-page “Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States,” while “certainly not light reading,” is an extremely detailed and valuable one-volume compilation. Points & Authorities: Books at a Glance Short reviews of “The Secret Man” by Bob Woodward, “In the Shadow of the Law” by Kermit Roosevelt and “Complicity” by Anne Farrow, Joel Lang and Jenifer Frank.
