In a roundabout way, Paul Mickey Jr. is going home. After 20 years at what was then known as Shaw Pittman, the firm’s former managing partner is jumping ship to Steptoe & Johnson, the firm once run by his father, Paul Mickey Sr. “It’s a combination of it having been a long time and an intense time,” says Mickey Jr. He departs after leading Shaw Pittman from 1995 to 2003, when the firm rode the dot-com wave — and crashed. After Shaw Pittman’s April merger with Pillsbury Winthrop, Mickey says, he was looking for a “fresh start” where he could help grow a practice. Also, Mickey says he had run into client conflicts in his labor and employment work, since the merger turned the 350-attorney D.C. firm into a 900-attorney giant.
