Jason Klitenic, the former deputy general counsel at the Department of Homeland Security, plans to join McKenna Long & Aldridge as a partner in September. Klitenic, who was a partner at Atlanta’s Alston & Bird before going to work for the Bush administration in 2002, says he was attracted to McKenna’s booming homeland security practice. “It seemed to be a natural fit,” says Klitenic, who will split time between the firm’s Atlanta and D.C. offices. McKenna represents several companies seeking protection from the DHS under the Safety Act, which in certain situations immunizes companies that develop anti-terrorism technology from civil liability. Under government ethics rules, Klitenic can advise firm clients — such as Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, and McNeil Security — but cannot represent the companies before the department for one year. Klitenic also plans to represent companies and individuals facing federal investigations. In that area, he may face friendly competition from another Bush administration veteran, brother-in-law Christopher Wray. The former head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division recently joined Atlanta-based King & Spalding as head of the firm’s white-collar defense practice.
