SAN FRANCISCO Farella Braun & Martel has appointed partner Robert Holtzapple as chair of the firm’s business litigation practice. Holtzapple will supervise a team of 31 litigators involved in a wide range of civil, criminal and regulatory matters. He is a 1989 graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law. The American Bar Association has named Sandy McCandless, a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, to chair the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). She is one of only three women to hold the title in TIPS’ history. SOUTH BAY Christian Mammen has joined Day Casebeer Madrid & Batchelder in Cupertino as an associate. Mammen, who was previously with Heller Ehrman, graduated from Cornell Law School in 1993. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Gordon & Rees has added partner Laurie Axford to its intellectual property group in San Diego. Axford previously headed the San Diego office of Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis, which recently merged with Buchanan Ingersoll. She received her J.D. from Western State University Law School in 1992. Alison Mijares and David Marquez have joined the litigation group of Steefel, Levitt & Weiss in Los Angeles as associates. Mijares most recently was a senior staff attorney at the NASD before coming to the firm. She graduated from University of San Francisco School of Law in 2002. Marquez, who was previously with Hatch & Parent, is a 2003 graduate of Northwestern University School of Law. Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliot has added James Pugh as an associate in its Orange County land use practice. Pugh comes to the firm from Michael Brandman Associates, an environmental consulting firm. He received his J.D. from McGeorge School of Law at University of the Pacific in 1999. Brad Brian, a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles, has been named chair of the American Bar Association’s litigation section. He specializes in complex civil and criminal litigation, as well as high-profile government investigations. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1977.
